Electric Hot Water Cylinders ( HWC ) are the most common of all hot water heating we find through out New Zealand.The basic principles are;

 Storage water heaters hold hot water in a thermally insulated container until it is required. Hot water which is less dense than cold water, rises to the top of the cylinder where it is drawn off and replaced by cold water entering the cylinder at the bottom.

What i find in most older homes is the installation of the classic low pressure open vented HWC.This is where the incoming cold water supply is reduced by a Pressure Reduction Valve and as most would have heard it as an "AJAX" valve.This particular valve sets the incoming water pressure to either 3.7/7.6/12.2 mtr's of head. The pressure in these systems is greatly reduced form what is available and when these systems fail i have only ever replaced like for like once.Typically this is the time to upgrade to a mains pressure HWC, or look at some other type of fuel source.

Electric HWC's tend to be fairly maintenance free, with the occasional thermostat and element needing replacement and, but they are prone to splitting when they get to there later years and this can be costly exercise depending on how and where the HWC is located.Depending on what system you have ( mains pressure/low pressure ) there are valves that will need up keep over periods of time and periodically replacing to make sure the system is working efficiently and safely.

The water pressure at which a storage heater operates may be:

• low pressure – open-vented systems where the pressure is provided by a cold water storage header tank (3-12 metre head – 30 to 120 kPa) (typically 3-7 metre head)
• low pressure – systems which rely on a pressure-reducing valve to reduce the pressure below the mains pressure (3-12 metre head – 30 to 120 kPa) ( typically 3-7 metre head)
• mains pressure – with a working pressure equal to the incoming supply ( ranging from 120 kPa to 1400 kPa) (typically 350-700 kPa)
